WHS Gymnast Rachel Furlong had an impressive showing at the OHSAA State Gymnastics meet last weekend finishing 3rd in the State in the All-Around! Rachel, a Junior at WHS, is the first Gymnast in school history to finish this high. With the finish, only .7 points separated Rachel from 2nd place and only 1.2 points from 1st place.
It is clear that greater things are coming Rachel’s way! Speaking of her experiences competing at the state level, Rachel said, “Last year was my first ever time qualifying for State so I really was going into it blindly. I had no idea what kind of environment to expect or how I would handle the pressure. Coming in my junior year, I knew exactly what the arena would be like and the energy to expect. My training had prepared me to be 100% ready to go out and do my thing. I knew I had to mentally stay in the zone and stay focused and I would do exactly what I needed to. At this year’s State meet I felt relaxed and laid back the entire time, which really helped me perform to the best of my abilities. It felt very rewarding to stand on the podium, because moments like that are what make all the hard work worth it.”
Only a Junior, Rachel is on her way to looking forward to greater things in her senior year. When asked how she will be approaching this off season in preparation for her Senior year, Rachel is looking forward to not missing a beat. “Going into the 2021 season I’m gonna take about a week off from practice and then get right back into it. Training 20 hours a week will be my summer and school year schedule.”
Including Rachel, only 10 Gymnasts in Wooster History have been state qualifiers. Of these ten, Rachel is the highest finisher in Wooster History with her 3rd place finish. Rachel also holds school records for the balance beam, vault, floor, and all around. Congratulations Rachel and Congratulations Wooster Gymnastics!
